The Victorious Christian Life
These are very important lessons that every Christian should learn. So many Christian live their life defeated by sin. The Christian life is glorious when we realize how to have victory over sin.
This is lesson 1 of 4
As you read and study these wonderful truths, take time to think upon what the scriptures are teaching. Words of explanation are given, yet meditate upon the scripture to fully learn the truth of what God's Word teaches. They will only do you good when they are personally applied to your lives.
Lesson # 1
A decision every believer has to make
( I want to encourage you to spend time thinking about
this lesson and especially the text of the Bible.)
1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
There are only two groups of people in the world. Those that are saved, and those that are lost. When we talk about saved believers, we can put them in three groups. The three groups are the three levels to which they have grown spiritually.
We are going to look at the different categories, four in all. Every believer begins his spiritual life as a baby. Believers can grow slow or fast. That which affects our spiritual growth are the decisions that we make as a child of God. We need to learn to make decisions in the will of God. The decisions we make affect whether we will live victorious Christian lives or defeated Christian lives. To be Christian is to be Christ-like. This should be our continual goal. Every day, we decide if we are going to grow more victorious or defeated.
1st The natural man
The natural man is what we all are when we are born into this world. The natural man is Fallen man or as the Bible says. a sinner and the sight of God. The natural man can not, or does not receive the things of God
1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The natural man wants to depend on his own works to be saved. Consider the verse below and see very clearly that we are not and cannot be saved according to our good works.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
The natural man will always want to follow the broad path, the path that this whole world is on or as the Bible says the course of this world.
Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
The natural man is the very reason that we need to accept Christ as Saviour. Jesus Christ accomplished that which we could never do which is the payment of our sins. I hope that is a reality in your life and that you can point to a time in your life when you accepted Jesus Christ as your savior.
2nd The babe in Christ
It is important to understand that when we accept Christ as our saviour we enter into a spiritual life, the Bible calls it being born again. This Life starts just like our physical life in the sense that we are babies in Christ when we first begin.
1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
The Bible says that the new born desires milk. The milk of the word is simply reading the Word of God without man's opinion. Look up 1 Cor. 3:1-2 and see some more about this. This is one of the reasons that it is so important to attend Church, so we can be fed spiritually and grow in the faith.
3rd The Defeated Christian

Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
The defeated Christian is the one that is living as he always did as a natural man, just like he was before he got saved. This is the carnal (fleshly, natural) believer which has never gotten into the milk of the Word of God. The defeated Christian is the carnal believer which has never taken the steps that are needed for spiritual growth and as a result he never experiences the Victorious Christian Life and instead lives in continual defeat. If we will be honest with ourselves, the revolving door that keeps leading back into jail or prison is often experienced by defeated Christians. A spiritual birth can take place, but it takes spiritual growth to exit the defeated life.
Verse 13 above should be a life-long challenge and desire for the believer. To learn how to mortify the old flesh (natural man). Mortify is to do the work of a mortician. The old man is dead (Gal 2:20) so get him out of the way so we can learn to follow after the Holy Spirit instead.
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Verse 7 above explains why this is so important, that old natural/carnal mind is at war with the things of God. (Enmity = enemy, or the opposite of friendship)
Verse 8 above is talking about functioning as the old natural man. and in doing so we will never please God. The reason is that the “carnal” child of God is a slave to sinful habits.
Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
4th The Victorious Christian
(Spend some time thinking on this text below)
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
The defeated Christian becomes defeated by carnal desires. The sacrifice that God desires of us, is also that which moves us from defeat to victory. According to Rom 12:1-2 above, this starts with presenting ourselves to God sacrificially. The 2nd step is not being conformed to the world (old natural man) anymore. The 3rd step is renewing our minds in the Word of God. In doing so the child of God can truly learn the joy that comes by being in God’s will
The Victorious Christian life is available to every child of God. The beginning of it is deciding that we want it, and then begin making decisions according to the will of God. The key is to yield yourself to God. When we are yielded to God we find joy in the life that God offers us. To wait in yielding yourself to God is to wait on experiencing the victorious Christian Life.

Lesson #2 of 4
Our Relationship and our Fellowship
It is essential that we understand the difference between our relationship with God and our fellowship with God. God’s desire, since the creation of the first man was for fellowship. Sin entered in and broke that fellowship between God and man. Adam lost his ability to fellowship with God because of sin. This is the condition that we are born in. . .
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
When we are born there is “enmity” between God and us because of the sin that is present in our life. God took that “enmity” (animosity, hatred) and placed it upon the cross, when Christ was dying for us ….
Ephesians 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
When we come to Christ and by faith trust Him as our Saviour, that enmity is taken away and we enter into a relationship with God. This relationship is a result of birth.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
We enter into this new relationship by way of being born into the Family of God. Now, as a child of God we have the chance to have fellowship with our Heavenly Father.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Our relationship with God
John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one.
Think about the text above. Answer the questions below for yourself. Find the answers in the Word of God above. What does Jesus give to us? When will we perish? We are in the hands of 2 persons, who are they?
Our relationship with God depends completely upon God. What did the Apostle Paul say could ever separate us from God?
Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Our relationship with God is from a birth and as a result God calls us Sons and as Sons we are heirs.
Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
It is very simple, if we have the Son then we have life, and this life is eternal!
1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
The family of God is made up of all that have ever been saved by faith in Jesus Christ. When we were saved God gave us eternal life. This “eternal life” began for us when we were born into God's family. Just like any family, children behave in different ways. Sometimes children do things that their father does not like, but this does not stop the child from belonging to the family. Many things can happen, but to be “unborn” is impossible! While those that are born into God's Family are not perfect, the Heavenly Father is. He deals with His Children as a Father, desiring to keep the fellowship open.
Our relationship depends entirely upon God. We do not maintain our relationship with God, God does. Fellowship with God is a different matter.
Our Fellowship with God
While we can not affect our relationship, we certainly can affect our fellowship. Fellowship is our ability to communicate openly with each other. When a child disobeys his Father he is still a son, but not a son that is going to communicate freely with his father. The father is going to have one desire for that child, and that is to take care of this matter of disobedience. Once the disobedience has been corrected and forgiven then sin is out of the way, and fellowship can be regained. Fellowship depends on us.
1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
In verse 6 -7 above “if WE walk in the light” –“WE have fellowship”. What “WE” do, does affect our fellowship, both with God and other children of God. Notice the example we are to walk after, “as HE is in the light”.
There are certain things that we must do
in order to keep the fellowship good with God.
1st We must daily confess our sins to God as we pray.
Answer for yourself these questions according to the text above. Our part is to confess our sins to God and then God does two things. When we do our part what 2 things does God do? (see 1 John 1:9 above)
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
We confess to only one man that is our mediator. According to the verse above, who is the man that we confess to?
According to the Bible verse below, what happens if I refuse to come to God and get forgiveness for my sins that I know I have done.
Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
The 2nd thing we need to do is read and study God’s Word.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Studying will do two important things according to the verse above. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God,” studying the Bible will mold your life to the place where you know that you have God's approval. “needeth not to be ashamed”, The more you study your Bible, the more you will see Christ and the Christian life as fact. This results in not
being ashamed of the things of Christianity.
The 3rd thing we need to learn to do is to crucify the old life
2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Notice in the verse above, there are 2 lives. The old one that “in Christ” is passed away and the new life. We have to determine that we are not going to live the old life but the new one.
In the verse below, how did Paul live his life?
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Paul put self to death every day and let Christ live through his life.
1 Corinthians 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
Relationship and fellowship are two entirely different things.
There is no chance of fellowship without first having a relationship. (Have been born into His family)
Once we have entered into that father son relationship we need to daily maintain our fellowship with our Heavenly Father.
Our fellowship with God is the source of our joy.
Make it a daily habit to ….
1) Guard your life against sin.
2) Spend time with God in prayer and Bible study.
3) Speak to others of Christ.
4) Die daily to sin and self.

The 2 natures of the Christian
FLESH SPIRIT
Write out the 17 works of the flesh listed and then the 8 works of the Spirit listed. It is a good exercise in order to see the difference.
Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

In light of the 2 lists above, consider the “struggle” that even the Apostle Paul wrestles with
Romans 7:15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Soon after somebody receives Christ as their personal Saviour, they realize that there is a new battle going on. This war that every child of God faces is that battle between the flesh and the Spirit. If we are to grow as we desire as a Christian we must understand this battle that we face. The Apostle Paul understood clearly that the battle could only be won through the Strength of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom. 7)
The Child of God can only defeat the flesh as He yields himself to God. This is a spiritual warfare in which both the flesh and the Spirit want control of our hearts. If we yield our bodies to things of the “flesh” (consider the list above) then our carnal nature will win the battle for the control of our bodies. Yet, if we yield our bodies to God then the “Spirit” (consider the contrasting list above) will win control of our hearts.
Only when God the Holy Spirit controls us, will we be victorious and joyful Christians. That is why we have to seek every day, the power of the Holy Spirit in surrendering our lives fully to God.
A Close look at the 2 Natures
Our carnal nature, (that which produces the works of the flesh) is not just the body. It is that part of us that wants to sin. That part of us that would rather please Satan instead of God.
Look what happens if we allow the works of the flesh to rule?
Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Consider the results of the work of the flesh and the work of the Spirit?
Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
This means that the carnal mind (driven by the works of the flesh, as you listed above) is God’s enemy.
Our Spiritual nature is that part of us that is made alive when the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. It is that part of us that communicates with God.
John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him
must worship him in spirit and in truth.
The Holy Spirit is given in order to assist us in gaining victory over the flesh.
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, [means to be made alive] who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Our spirit is that part of us which is made alive. It is through our spirit that we communicate with God.
1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
HOW TO GAIN VICTORY OVER THE FLESH
1. Yield your will to the Spirit.
This is done by putting the works of the flesh out of commission. (reckoning, or realizing that we are dead to sin)
Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Reckon means to bring into account)
Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Reign means control. We should not let sin control us. If sin controls us, it will produce the “works of the flesh” instead of the works of the Spirit.
Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
2. Set your minds on things of God.
This includes worshiping God, praising God, reading His Word, Praying, and witnessing.

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
3. Ask God to fill you with His Presence and Power.
(Which is to be filled with the Holy Spirit)
This is the way to victory that we so desperately need.
Luke 11:13 . . . how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
There are definite works of the flesh, and then there are definite works of the Spirit.
That which the flesh works comes more easily, yet it will always work destruction.
In the exact same manner there are those works that the Spirit does.
The Holy Spirit came late in our life so it is more difficult to allow His works.
Yet, what the Holy Spirit works will always be better for us in our lives.

The 3 Enemies of the Christian
In our walk with God there are three enemies that every child of God faces. The world, the flesh, and the devil. An enemy is someone that wants to destroy the opposing force. There are three that have that desire to destroy us. We should know our enemy's presence and his tactics. Each of these three enemies has the ability to rob us of our victory and our joy.
When we speak of the world, we are not speaking of this earth. But rather the system, which we live in, is under Satan’s control. When we speak of the flesh, we are not referring to the cover of our bodies, but to the part of us that desires to sin. When we speak of the devil, we are talking about a real personal Devil. The one who stalks the earth today seeking whom he may destroy.
Any of the three enemies can and will rob us of opportunities to live the victorious Christian life. (Really spend some time thinking on the Bible text below)
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
The World is our enemy.
The bible refers to the “world” (:2 above) as the world system that we live in. Before we were saved, the world was the only way we knew how to live.
The Devil is the god (one in control) of this world.
2Cor 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
According to the verse above, what has he done to the minds of men?
We are not to love the world.
1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
What does the verse above say is missing from our life if we love the world?
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
According to the verse above, everything in the world can be put into three categories. What are they?
The world seeks to engulf the Christian with its promise of fame, fortune, and power. But the Christian has a power within him that allows him to overcome the world. According to the verse below, what is that power?
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Jesus’ prayer is recorded in John chapter 17
(fascinating to read his prayer, the whole chapter is Jesus praying).
John 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
We live in this world but God warns that the evil of this world can have serious effects on us if we are not aware.
The flesh is our enemy
Simply stated, the flesh is the human nature, without God’s influence and control. We were each born with a sinful nature which is constantly trying to regain control of the believers’ life after we are saved.
Ephesians 2:3 …we all had our conversation [lifestyle, or way of life] in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
We lived our lives “ fulfilling the desires of the flesh”
The verse below talks about the war that goes on inside of us and sins desire to take captive.
Romans 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Then the Apostle Paul asks a question in the verse above about how we can win the victory over this “body of death”. The verse below gives the answer to that question.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
The Devil is our Enemy
Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
The devil is a powerful prince, watching and knowing what is going on in this world system. Every child of God will be in a never-ending battle with Satan his entire life. Satan never gives up. But if we know him and are aware of his tactics, he can be defeated. These verses each give a different name of the devil:
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
1 Thessalonians 2:18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
God gives us a suit to wear in order to defeat the devil:
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
The Apostle Paul is trying to say that this is a spiritual battle that we are fighting. We fight it in God's strength and not our own.
In Ephesians 6:14-17, there are six pieces of armor mentioned that the Christian must have in order to defeat Satan. What are they?
Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

All three of our enemies are powerful opponents, but through Christ we can have victory over the world, the flesh and the devil.
